Most people choose their trainers carefully and then grab whatever socks are in the drawer. But the sock is what actually touches your foot, and the wrong one means slipping, rubbing and blisters halfway through a workout.
1. A snug fit that doesn't move
A gym sock should hug the foot without squeezing. Loose socks bunch up under the heel, and tight ones restrict movement. A little stretch from Lycra keeps the sock in place through squats, jumps and sprints.
2. The right height
For training, a sock that covers the ankle, like a half sock, protects your skin from the collar of your trainers. Ankle socks work for shorter sessions and low shoes if you prefer a lower look.
3. Breathable material
Cotton is soft and breathable, which makes it comfortable for the gym and everyday training. For very long runs or endurance events, many runners choose technical synthetic socks that dry faster. For the gym, a football match with friends or a daily walk, a cotton blend works well.
4. A clean pair every session
Never re-wear workout socks. Sweat and bacteria build up quickly, and that's where the smell comes from. Having enough pairs to change after every session is the easiest upgrade you can make. Read how many pairs of socks you need.
5. Wash them right
Wash inside out at 30–40°C and air-dry, so the elastic keeps its stretch. Full guide: how to wash cotton socks.
