Sweaty Feet and Sock Odour: 8 Practical Tips

Black Cotza half socks with white sneakers

Feet have a lot of sweat glands, and inside a closed shoe that sweat has nowhere to go. The smell comes from bacteria that feed on sweat, so the goal is simple: keep your feet and socks as dry and clean as possible.

1. Wear a clean pair every day

Never wear the same socks two days in a row, and always change after the gym.

2. Choose breathable socks

Cotton absorbs moisture and lets the skin breathe. A cotton blend with a little Lycra keeps the fit snug without trapping heat.

3. Dry your feet properly

After a shower, dry between your toes before you put your socks on.

4. Give your shoes a day off

Shoes need about a day to dry out completely. Alternating between two pairs makes a big difference.

5. Wash socks inside out

Sweat and bacteria collect on the inside of the sock, so wash them inside out. Full guide: how to wash cotton socks.

6. Let your shoes air out

Take the insoles out now and then, and keep shoes somewhere ventilated rather than in a closed cupboard.

7. Always wear socks with closed shoes

Bare feet in trainers is the fastest way to a smelly shoe.

8. Know when to see a doctor

If you sweat very heavily, or notice itching, peeling or redness between the toes, talk to a doctor or pharmacist, as it may need treatment.
